2020 Competition Winners

Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge:
First Place – A three-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University received top honors in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, A Cost-effective Approach to Predict Noise Impacts for Non-Towered GA Airports. Dr. John Mott served as faculty adviser
Second Place – A five-member team from the Mechanical Engineering – Engineering Mechanics Department at Michigan Technological University placed second in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Glycol Collection Cart: A Design for Small Airports. Dr. Paul van Susante and Dr. William Endres served as faculty advisers.
Third Place – A nine-member team from the Binghamton University Scholars Program at Binghamton University – State University of New York placed third in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Catch-CO2: Integration of Carbon Capture Technology on UAS. Professors Zachary Staff and Chad Nixon served as faculty advisers.
Airport Operation and Maintenance Challenge:
First Place – A four-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University received top honors in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Aircraft Portable Stair and Accessible Loader (PSAL). Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty adviser.
Second Place –
A nine-member team from the Binghamton University Scholars Program at Binghamton University – State University of New York placed second in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, ADS-B Vulnerability Security Mitigation System. Professors Zachary Staff and Chad Nixon served as faculty advisers.
Third Place – Two proposals tied for third place in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category, both teams from Penn State University.
1. A four-member team from the Penn State University Engineering Leadership department at Penn State University won with its design titled, Drone Repellent of Invasive Birds (D.R.I.B). Dr. Meg Handley served as faculty advisor.
2. A four-member team from the Penn State University Engineering Leadership department at Penn State University won with its design titled, MINI HFSS (High Frequency Sound Systems). Dr. Meg Handley served as faculty advisor.
Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions Challenge:
First Place – A three-member team from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Michigan Technological University received top honors in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Runway Intersection Marking. Dr. Audra Morse served as faculty adviser.
Second Place – A four-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University placed second in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Incorporating NextGen Technology in Ground Vehicles to Decrease Runway Incursions. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty adviser
Airport Management and Planning Challenge:
First Place – A three-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University received top honors in Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, Commercial Space Advancement through Venture and Operations (CSAVO) Initiative. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty adviser.
Second Place – A two-member team from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of South Florida placed second in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, A Modular Operation Solution to Airport Baggage Transportation. Dr. Xiaopeng Li served as faculty adviser
Third Place – A three-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University placed third in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, Integrated Preventive Maintenance Solutions for Airport Assets Management. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty adviser.
Honorable Mentions given to:
A two-member team from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Rutgers University won an honorable mention in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Sustainability Assessment of Electrification of Ground Support Equipment at Airports. Dr. Hao Wang served as faculty adviser.
A three-member team from the Systems & Software Department at Stevens Institute of Technology won an honorable mention in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, AR Landing Smart Glasses. Professor Eirik Hole served as faculty adviser.
A five-member team from the Price College of Business at the University of Oklahoma won an honorable mention in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, WheelMate: An Assistive Device for a Standardized Method for Wheelchair Transfer with Asset Tracking Capabilities. Professor Jeff Moore and Fellow Jamie Franzese served as faculty advisers.
