2021 Competition Winners

 Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge: 

 First Place – A three-member team from the College of Aeronautics at Florida Institute of Technology received top honors in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, FlyKey. Dr. Deborah Carstens served as faculty adviser.

Airport Operation and Maintenance Challenge: 

First Place – A five-member team from the Aviation and Technology Department at San Jose State University received top honors in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Conceptual Design of Vertiport and UAM Corridor. Dr. Wenbin Wei served as faculty adviser.

Airport Operation and Maintenance Challenge: 

Second Place – A two-member team from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Michigan Technological University placed second in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, sUAS Hazard Detection System. Dr. Audra Morse served as faculty adviser.

Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions Challenge:  

First Place – A three-member team from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Michigan Technological University received top honors in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Graphical NOTAM Interface For Improving Efficiency of Reporting NOTAM Information. Dr. Audra Morse served as faculty adviser.

Airport Management and Planning Challenge: 

First Place – Two proposals tied for first place in the Airport Management and Planning category, one from the University of California, Berkeley and the other from the University of Utah. 

A five-member team from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley won with its design titled, High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Traffic Management Concept on Airfields: Increasing Airport Capacity and Reducing Passenger Delay. Dr. Jasenka Rakas served as faculty adviser.

Full Design 

A three-member team from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Utah won with its design titled, Automatic Independent Video-based Air Traffic Surveillance system (AIVATS). Dr. Abbas Rashidi and Dr. Nikola Markovic served as faculty advisers. 

Full Design 

 Second Place – A four-member team from the School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs at Penn State University placed second in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, L.E.N.D. – Low Energy Navigation Device. Dr. Meg Handley served as faculty adviser.

 Third Place – A three-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University placed third in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, Modernization of Airport Cell Phone Lots: Reduce Landside Congestion and Increase Airport Sustainability. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty adviser.

Honorable Mentions given to: 

A four-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University won an honorable mention in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Alternative Energy for Ground Support Equipment. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty adviser. 

A three-member team from the College of Aeronautics at Florida Institute of Technology won an honorable mention in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, UAS Solutions to Deicing/Anti-icing Waste Management. Dr. Deborah Carstens served as faculty adviser. 

A four-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University won an honorable mention in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Novel Simulation System to Contain and Control the Spread of Diseases at Airports. Dr. John Mott served as faculty adviser. 

A three-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University won an honorable mention in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Rapid Inspection Capabilities for Airport Infrastructure and Obstruction Management with Unmanned Aerial Systems. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty adviser. 

A two-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University won an honorable mention in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, A Novel Design for Retrofitting Jet Bridges with Autonomous Docking Capabilities. Dr. John Mott served as faculty adviser. 

A five-member team from the School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs at Penn State University won an honorable mention in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Countering Environmental Obstacles of Remote/Virtual Towers. Dr. Meg Handley and Dr. Paul Meister served as faculty advisers. 

A four-member team from the School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs at Penn State University won an honorable mention in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Airport Interactive Mapping App. Dr. Meg Handley served as faculty adviser.
