Spaceport America Cup 2018 – Rocketry at Virginia Tech

This summer, Rocketry at Virginia Tech competed at the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association’s 2018 Spaceport America Cup.

The Spaceport America Cup touts itself as the world’s largest collegiate rocket engineering conference and competition. This year, over 1,500 students and faculty participated in the competition held in Southern New Mexico. The Spaceport America Cup is designed around the IREC – the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition.

About 35 team members of the Rocketry at Virginia Tech team, advised by Kevin Shinpaugh, designed a rocket 10.5 feet long. The rocket had a total mass of 65 pounds and was designed to fly to an altitude of 10,000 feet.

A video of the group launching their rocket can be seen here.
