Xperience XinaBox: Experiential Learning for IoT

Xperience XinaBox is a virtual professional development program for Virginia’s middle and high school teachers of CTE and STEM courses, with particular relevance for those who teach classes in business and information technology, science, cybersecurity, manufacturing, or engineering. This program was developed by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education-Career and Technical Education.

Participants in Xperience XinaBox will learn how to assemble modular “xChip” components to build a digital instrument, connect it to the Internet of Things (IoT), and work with Big Data without wires, soldering, or coding. For this workshop teachers will build and use a weather station; for additional XinaBox project potential please visit the XinaBox website.

Imagine the impact of this experiential lesson for middle and high school students when they are not only challenged to analyze some data but to also manipulate large data sets collected through an experiment they personally designed, and an IoT device they collaboratively built!

COVID-19 Response

We recognize instructional environments in school districts across Virginia are highly varied right now and many teachers may be limited to a virtual, demonstration-style lesson using the kit. Students will still be able to access and analyze data from an IoT device they saw being constructed from modular components (power, sensors, processing, and communication). IoT and Big Data content knowledge remains at the core of the lesson. A key component of this innovative program is the support that will be given to teachers throughout the process. We will be partners alongside teachers to ensure a meaningful lesson is developed for students that will be engaging for their unique learning environment.
