CubeSat Vibration Testing

On September 20 and 21, two teams from the Virginia CubeSat Constellation project tested their CubeSats at NASA Langley. The teams, from UVA and Virginia Tech were assisted by Nathan Daniels from NanoRacks and Dr. Kenny Elliott from NASA Langley’s Vibration Lab. The remaining CubeSat team, from Old Dominion University, scheduled their testing at a later date. The CubeSats were delivered by the teams, wrapped in bubble wrap, and covered in foam for the test in the “shaker.” The vibration machine at NASA Langley is a 25,000 pound electromagnetic machine that can emulate rocket launch conditions.

More than 140 students from ODU, UVA, Virginia Tech and Hampton University have been engaged in the Constellation project.

In November, the three 4 x 4 inch CubeSats will be launched to the International Space Station where they will be used to study orbital decay.
