GeoTEd-UAS?<\/h3><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_empty_space\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the integration and combination of geospatial technology and small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) into nearly every employment sector increases, the demand for skilled technicians to support the multitude of applications is expanding. sUAS and the ability to collect and analyze high-resolution geospatial data on demand are poised to transform businesses, impact safety and security, improve health, and reshape the economy.<\/span><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>sUAS\u2014one of the disruptive technologies of our time\u2014will transform our daily lives over the next few decades as profoundly as the smartphone and the only way to realize the full potential is to grow the industry\u2019s current and future workforce.<\/p><p>The <strong>Improving Pathways into the Geospatial and Unmanned Aircraft Systems Technician Workforce\u00a0 (GeoTEd-UAS)<\/strong> project team includes the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC), Germanna Community College, Virginia Tech, and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).<\/p><p>Administered by the VSGC, the GeoTEd-UAS team was awarded a project grant by the National Science Foundation\u2019s Advanced Technological Education (NSF-ATE) program (NSF #2000715).<\/p><p>GeoTEd-UAS will prepare students for success as sUAS operations technicians (sUAS-OT) and as geospatial technicians. Small UAS-OT duties typically include planning and flying sUAS missions, maintaining sUAS, and processing geospatial data to analyze and solve problems.<\/p><p>Entry-level technician positions in geospatial technology generally include job titles such as geographic information systems (GIS) technician, survey and mapping technician, GIS specialist, spatial data technician, and other similar titles. These positions are broadly responsible for developing, creating, and maintaining spatial information layers stored in a GIS. A key\u00a0 component of the GeoTEd-UAS project is student recruitment of future community college students through outreach and exposure to role models in the field.<\/p><p>The project team has developed student outreach materials and offered programs for students in middle-school through college including hands on flying time with competitions, building a UAS, experience with a variety of vehicles and sensors, and exposure to professionals working the field.<\/p><p>The team has leveraged the archived GEOTREK-12 program created and sponsored by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium to develop outreach materials and coordinate and offer many outreach events for students and teachers. The GeoTEd-UAS team will continue to coordinate and offer these outreach events and look for opportunities to expand the program.\u00a0<\/p><p>Former GeoTEd-UAS cohort participant, Veronica Spradlin is a high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher in Montgomery County, Virginia. She developed and offered the first-ever pilot UAS course for the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). VDOE is now working with Veronica to further develop the course and make it available to all teachers in the Commonwealth.\u00a0 GeoTEd-UAS PI Chris Carter will serve on the curriculum review committee and ensure the course is informed by the work of the GeoTEd-UAS team.\u00a0<\/p><div id=\"pl-278\" class=\"panel-layout\"><div id=\"pg-278-0\" class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\"><div id=\"pgc-278-0-0\" class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-mobile-last\" data-weight=\"0.66819571865443\"><div id=\"panel-278-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" data-style=\"{&quot;background_display&quot;:&quot;tile&quot;}\"><div class=\"textwidget\"><p>Below is a summary of outreach events that have been offered through the project:<\/p><ol><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since 2015, Virginia Peninsula Community College has hosted a STEM Saturday event through the VSGC Technology Exploration Saturday series. This event provides hands-on flying and a UAS competition for 90 middle school students each year.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The GeoTEd-UAS team led a UAS Track during the annual Materials in STEM (M-STEM) Conference hosted by Thomas Nelson Community College and coordinated by <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/materialseducation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MatEdu<\/a>, the NSF-ATE funded National Resource Center for Materials. More than 20 teachers gained hands-on sUAS flying experience and materials to integrate into the classroom.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">John Tyler Community College hosted a STEM day where 12 students participated in a drone competition and also gained hands-on experience flying a commercial sUAS.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Virginia Peninsula Community College hosted a Technology Summer Camp where 12 students participated in hands-on activities with UAS.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As part of VSGC\u2019s Virginia Space Coast Scholars summer academy for 10th graders hosted by NASA Wallops Flight Facility, 80 Students participated in hands-on UAS flying and competitions during two separate week-long events.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A total of 40 underrepresented minority and underserved students from Gar-Field High School participated in hands-on sUAS flying and competitions with support from a 21st-century grant awarded to the school.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mountain Empire Community College provided a one-day sUAS experience for 24 high school students from local area schools. The event provided the students with both in-class and hands-on training. The College also provided a sUAS strand in the summer Governor\u2019s School that attracted 16 rising high school seniors. These students completed both the Part 107 (UMS 107) course and an Introduction to UAS (UMS-111) course in a full-time two-week session.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mountain Empire Community College provided 22 high local school instructors a two-hour class with a hands-on introduction to sUAS and to the sUAS associates degree program offered at the college.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" Community College (TCC), and area school districts to provide student academies in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS, or drones). VSGC staff and VPCC faculty consultants will coordinate and lead two four-day Drone Academies that will be hosted by VSGC. VSGC staff and TCC faculty consultants will coordinate and host two four-day Drone Academies at their Virginia Beach campus.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>VSGC (vendor ID# 157247) is an affiliate of the Old Dominion University Research Foundation (ODURF) and is submitting the proposal as the lead institution. VSGC will work with community college faculty and consultants to coordinate the academies, develop and deliver instruction, purchase all materials, food\/snacks, and provide overall project oversight and fiscal administration.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><u>Drone Academies: <\/u><\/p><p>The two Drone Academies will each target a different age range. One Academy will target students 14-16 years of age, and the second Academy will target students 16-20 years of age.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><u>Goals for the Drone Academies:<\/u><\/p><ul><li>In partnership with DARS, provide career exploration, college preparation, and hands-on activities in the field of drones.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><u>Program Outcomes:<\/u><\/p><ul><li>Students will be able to identify the parts of a drone and learn about various applications of drones.<\/li><li>Students will explore careers in the drone industry.<\/li><li>Students will learn the basics about flight and aerodynamics and the differences between fixed wing, multi-rotor, and other drones.<\/li><li>Students will pass The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) for recreational drone flyers.<\/li><li>Students will understand the role of the FAA and drone regulations that promote aviation safety and be able to distinguish between FAA Part 107 and TRUST operations.<\/li><li>Students will be able to identify the different crew roles, know how to check the weather and airspace, and conduct a pre-flight inspection of a drone.<\/li><li>Students will learn and demonstrate basic flight maneuvers.<\/li><li>Students will also learn the basics of photography and videography using
