The GeoTEd-UAS faculty institutes provide professional development and training to community college faculty on the safe and efficient operation of UAS and data analysis. After attending the GeoTEd-UAS Institute, faculty are better qualified to serve as UAS instructors, to integrate sUAS within their existing discipline / curriculum, to analyze and interpret data, and to provide the trained technicians needed to meet employer demand.

The GeoTEd-UAS team provided two one-week Faculty UAS Institutes hosted by Virginia Tech, and held during the summers of 2017 and 2018. In 2019, a three-day institute was hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University’s Rice River Center. A total of 42 educators have been trained.

Institute topics included: FAA Part 107 regulation; manual and autonomous sUAS flight operations; mission planning; sUAS maintenance and repair; sensor selection; data capture formatting and post processing; and remote sensing data analysis.

Resources

The GeoTEd-UAS project team has developed numerous faculty resources to support UAS instruction. Many of these resources were implemented by the team as part of the community college faculty institutes. See links below to view and download these resources. There are additional resources available at the Resources tab here https://vsgc.odu.edu/geoted-uas/resources/
