2017 Competition Winners

Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge:
First Place – A six-member team from the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder, received top honors in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Control of Deicing Chemicals at Airports Using Subterranean Aerated Gravel Beds. Dr. Chris Corwin served as faculty advisor.
Second Place – A student from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio placed second in the Airport Environmental Interactions category with its design titled, Developing Energy Harvesting Prototypes to Generate Electricity from Runway Pavement Infrastructures of Airports. Dr. Samer Dessouky and Dr. A.T. Papagiannakis served as faculty advisors.
Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions Challenge:
First Place – A four-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University received top honors in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Airport Runway Ice and Snow Monitoring System with Remote Sensing Technology. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty advisor.
Second Place – A ten-member team from the Computer Science Department at the University of Southern California placed second in the Runway Safety/Runway Incursions/Runway Excursions category with its design titled, Tower ASDE-X Improvement. Dr. Michael Crowley served as faculty advisor.
Airport Operations And Maintenance Challenge:
First Place – A three-member team from the Mechanical Engineering Department at Tufts University received top honors in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Baggage Hygiene Monitoring System. Dr. Gary Leisk served as faculty advisor.
Second Place – A five-member team from Airport Management at Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus placed second in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Airport Imagery and Geospatial Data Collection Through the use of UAS. Dr. Tara Harl and Teaching Assistant Professor David Burchfield served as faculty advisors.
Third Place – A four-member team from the School of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens Institute of Technology placed third in the Airport Operation and Maintenance category with its design titled, Transtag – A Prioritization of Domestic Transfer Baggage. Professor Eirik Hole and Teaching Assistant Alanna Zappariello served as faculty advisor.
Airport Management And Planning Challenge:
First Place – A three-member team from the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University received top honors in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, Innovative Revenue Generation Strategies for GA Airports. Dr. Mary Johnson served as faculty advisor.
Second Place – A ten-member team from the Binghamton University Scholars Program at Binghamton University placed second in the Airport Management and Planning category with its design titled, SimpliFlight. Professors Chad Nixon and Zachary Staff served as faculty advisors.
