2008 Competition Winners

Airport Operations And Maintenance Challenge:

First Place – A team from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign advised by Dr. Imad Al-Qadi won first place for its submission on “Long-Lasting Pavement Structure Rehabilitation: Hot-Mix Asphalt Overlay.

Second Place – A team from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign advised by Dr. Erol Tutumluer captured second place on their proposal titled “Aircraft Wander Effects on Unbound Aggregate Layers.”

Third Place – A team from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the guidance of Dr. Imad Al-Qadi submitted the third place proposal titled, “A fast and automated approach for monitoring groove deterioration at airport pavements.”

Runway Safety/Runway Incursions Challenge:

First Place – A team from the College of Business at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. won first place for their design of a system that innovatively used GPS technologies to mitigate runway incursions caused by ground vehicles operating around runways. Dr. Seth Young was the team’s advisor.

Second Place – Two submissions from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Southern California tied for second place. The teams were advised by Dr. David Wilczynski. Teams under Dr. Wilczynski’s mentorship also captured two Honorable Mentions in this category.

Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge:

First Place – A team from the Sky Harbor campus of the Worldwide Department of Business Administration at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Phoenix, Ariz. won for a proposal to use solar energy as a clean, cost-effective alternative fuel for airport ground support equipment. The advisor was Dr. Edward Gordhammer.

Second Place – A team from the College of Technology, Aeronautics Division, Kent State University, won second place for their proposal titled, “Light Emitting Diodes: An Efficient Choice for Airfield Lighting.” Dr. Richmond Nettey was the Advisor.

Third Place – A team from the Department of Aviation, Saint Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minn. under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Aceves, Faculty Advisor captured third place for their proposal titled, “Geothermal Heating of Airport Runways.”
