2007 Competition Winners

Airport Operations And Maintenance Challenge:

First Place – A team from the Department of Aviation and Technology at San Jose State University, San Jose, California under the guidance of Faculty Advisor, Dr. Triant Flouris, had the distinction of submitting the first place team proposal. Their proposal titled, “Airport Communicator Software,” considered a software approach to integrating airport communications.

Runway Safety/Runway Incursions Challenge:

First Place – A team from the Psychology Department at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. submitted the first place proposal called, “Runway Incursion Monitoring and Direct Alert Systems (RIMDAS).” The students designed a system to address runway incursions. The Faculty Advisor was Dr. Raja Parasuraman.

Second Place – A team from the Departments of Aerospace, Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Ga. submitted the second place proposal titled, “Controller Clearance Broadcast System.” Dr. Amy Pritchett and Dr. Daniel Bruneau served as Faculty Advisors.

Third Place – A team from the Department of Systems and Information Engineering, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va., submitted the third place proposal titled, “A Systems Approach to Runway Incursion Prevention.” Dr. Barry Horowitz was their Faculty Advisor.

Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge:

First Place – A team from the Department of Aviation and Technology at San Jose State University, San Jose, California under the guidance of Faculty Advisor, Dr. Triant Flouris submitted the first place proposal titled, “Feasibility of Replacing Conventional Airport Lighting with Light Emitting Diodes.”

Second Place – A team from the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, University of Alabama Birmingham submitted the second place proposal addressing making snow and ice removal more environmentally friendly. The teams Faculty Advisors were Dr. Robert Peters and Dr. Nasim Uddin.

Third Place – A team from the Department of Civil Engineering, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, Indiana, submitted the third place proposal addressing making airport deicing more environmentally friendly. Dr. Michael Robinson served as the Faculty Advisor.
