GIS Internship Program Participant
Eligibility
Internship positions available:
(1) GIS Internship; (2) Historical Preservation Internship
The GIS Internship Program is open to community college, undergraduate, and graduate students majoring in the fields of geography, technology, and civil engineering with experience in geospatial technology or an interest in developing their skills in spatial data technology in support of NASA’s mission. A student majoring in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), history, archaeology or any other major and demonstrating an interest in working in historical documentation and geospatial technology (GIS) will also be considered.
Exceptional and highly motivated high school students with at least a 3.3 GPA and a demonstrated interest in entering a field such as geography, urban planning, civil engineering, or related area will also be considered.
(1) Primary duties for GIS Internship positon include (all Fall placements full):
Additional preferences and desired skills include experience with GIS data development and conversion and basic knowledge of principles of data collection, including GPS, digital cartography, GPS, AutoCAD, relational databases, planning, surveying, engineering (utility distribution), and remote sensing/aerial photography.
(2) Primary duties for Historical Preservation Internship positon include:
NASA GIS Internship Eligibility (at time of internship placement):
All interns at NASA are required to undergo a background security screening. This screening will take place after selection and before placement in the internship program. Students from outside the Hampton area are responsible for their own lodging, if needed.
The GIS Internship program seeks applications from students of all races, creeds, colors, national origins, ages and disabilities. Selected students under the age of 18 at time of selection will be required to have a parent/guardian complete the Parental Data form.
Application Information and Requirements
The .htm application is electronic and can be completed using your computer and any internet browser.
One complete copy of the entire application package must be mailed to:

The following items MUST be included in your
application package:
* One printed copy of the application, including the certification
section with applicant's original signature.
* One letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with your academic work.
Letter can be unsealed or sealed or sent directly to Chris Carter at cxcarter@odu.edu.
* One copy of official or
unofficial school transcript listing grades through spring (summer if applicable) semester of 2009.
Include transcripts from each college or university attended. An official
transcript will be required prior to final placement.
* Although not required, applicants are encouraged to submit hard-copies of samples of GIS projects with the application package.
No late applications or partial packages will be accepted. No faxed materials will be accepted (no exceptions).
APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY DEADLINE FOR APPROPRIATE SEMESTER. A courier service should be used to mail your application package or you may hand-deliver your application package to VSGC at the address above. We will not be able to accept queries regarding the status of individual applications. You will be notified if you are selected for an interview.
